Crossing the Mekong story cloth depicts the exodus of the Hmong from Laos to Thailand. It is all individually hand-made by Hmong women who are known for their needle art skills.
After 1975 thousands of Hmong fled to Thailand as result of Communists took over Laos. In the early 1980s, Hmong women in refugee camps in Thailand began stitching their refugee experience into story cloth. From the top, the Hmong were attacked and killed by Communist Lao forces. They escaped and crossed the deadly Mekong River where hundreds and thousands were dead by being shot at or drowned. Lastly some made it to Thailand.
