Yang Nia was born in an extremely poor Hmong family on the top of a mountain in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. He wore his first pair of shoes at the age of 13. Even though, he passed the entrance exam to study at Chiangmai University, he did not complete his study due to poverty. After working for a while, he studied at Ramkhamhaeng University and at Kingston University in England and attained a B.A. and a Master's degrees, respectively.

He has spent 38 years working with the United Nations in 10 countries on 3 continents, making him the world's first and longest serving Hmong in the United Nations.

He is married to Darunee Yangsirisuk and has two sons and a daughter (deceased in Croatia). His first son graduated with B.A. degree in U.S.A. The second son graduated with a B.A. degree with the second highest class honor (Magna Cum Laude) in Switzerland and was the first Hmong to receive a Swiss citizenship. Sometimes, his family of 4 were separated and stayed in 3 continents.

The book “Yang Nia: From Mountaintop to the United Nations" is an impressive story of a humble Hmong in Thailand, who fought patiently to obtain an education, escaped from the communist system, and includes his views on Hmong traditions. He also shares his work life experiences with the United Nations in 10 countries, and he has visited more than 70 countries.
