Zhang Xiumei: A Hmong General Who Fought Against Qing Government

Zhang Xiumei (Tsab Xyooj Mem) was the Chief General of one of the biggest Hmong rebellions in China, 1853 to 1872. He led many successful battles against Qing government troops, including the famous Battle of Huang Piao which killed some 20,000 Qing government troops in two days.

Zhang Xiumei was a native of today Taijiang City, Guizhou Province. Currently over 90% of the population of Taijiang are Hmong people who speak proudly of General Zhang. A stone statue of the general was erected in the center of Taijiang where he is remembered, honored, and worshipped.
